Citation : Ganeshan, S.; Biology, economic importance and management of sugar cane armyworms (Mythimna spp.) in Mauritius; 2005
Abstract : Every year, outbreaks of Mythimna spp. occur in young regrowths of machine-harvested sugar cane fields where trash-blanketing (the practice of leaving in situ the cane tops and dry leaves) is practised. The species composition of field populations was stu

Title : Influence of alien mammals on survival of 'Dodo-tree' seedlings and implications for conservation management
Year of publication : 2005
Keywords : FLORA; dodo tree; conservation management; ecology; mammals; Mauritius;
Citation : Florens, F. B. V.; Baider, C. ; Influence of alien mammals on survival of 'Dodo-tree' seedlings and implications for conservation management; 2005
Abstract : The population decline of the Mauritius endemic Dodo-tree (Sapotaceae) has recently been attributed largely to a reduced reproductive output caused by alien species. We adopted an experimental approach to investigate the fate of nursery germinated seedlings re-introduced in the native forest. This allowed the identification of impacts of alien mammals and trends of relevance to both conservation of the species and conservation management of Mauritian upland forest in general.

Title : A review of the 2002 milling season
Year of publication : 2003
Keywords : CANESUGAR; factory performance; cane quality; milling; evaporation; boiling house; sugar quality; electricity; energy; MAURITIUS;
Citation : wong Sak Hoi, L.; A review of the 2002 milling season; 2003
Abstract : This review covers the performance of the twelve sugar factories which operated in Mauritius during the 2002 season. Length of season, cane quality, milling work, boiling house performance, sugar production, sugar quality and energy production are examined and compared with values for the 2001 season (bracketed). All parameters were calculated from data supplied by the sugar factories. The 2002 crushing season has seen a reduction in both cane and sugar production (respectively 15.0 per cent and 19.3 per cent) compared with those of the 2001 season, which was the best of the last decade since 1987. This was due to cyclone Dina on 20-22 January, which affected both cane yields and the sucrose content in cane.

Title : A review of the 2003 milling season
Year of publication : 2003
Keywords : CANESUGAR; factory performance; cane quality; milling; evaporation; boiling house; sugar quality; electricity; energy; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Wong Sak Hoi, L.; A review of the 2003 milling season; 2003
Abstract : This review covers the performance of the eleven sugar factories which operated in Mauritius during the 2003 season. Length of season, cane quality, milling work, boiling house performance, sugar production, sugar quality and energy production are examined and compared with values for the previous season(bracketed). All parameters were calculated from data supplied by the sugar factories. The 2003 crop was among the worst in the last 45 years with low cane and sugar production. The bad performance was due to cyclone Gerry in February and unfavourably high rainfall during the cane ripening phase. The island average sucrose percent cane (11.80) was the lowest in Mauritian history except for 1999 (11.22) when cane production was affected by a severe drought.
