Title : Improved serological methods for the diagnosis of the leaf scald bacterium, Xanthomonas albilineans

Citation : Autrey, L. J. C.; Dookun, A.; Saumtally, S.; Improved serological methods for the diagnosis of the leaf scald bacterium, Xanthomonas albilineans; 1990
Abstract : The leaf scald bacterium was successfully diagnosed in crude and clarified sap and juice extracts by three serological methods with an antiserum having a titre of 1:2560. The tests allowed distinction of the organism from others causing gumming, mottled stripe and chlorotic streak which induce similar, when not identical, syndromes in sugar cane. The limits of detection of antigens from pure cultures were 1 x 10 5, 1 x 10 1, 1 x 10 0 cells per ml by immunofluorescence, latex flocculation and direct ELISA respectively. Latent infection was detected only by the direct ELISA method. The advantages and disadvantages of the methods used are discussed. The importance of using simple but sensitive as well as advanced methods for the disease diagnosis in sugar cane is emphasized.

Abstract : A trial was carried out in Mauritius to determine the most appropriate combination of irrigation regime, dripline placement and row spacing for drip-irrigated sugarcane grown under local conditions is described. Measurements were made of cane growth and yield on 14 treatments throughout 3 crop seasons ( a plant cane crop and 2 ratoon crops). Detailed measurement were also made of the distribution of soil water potential on each of the 14 treatments using 2-dimensional arrays of tensiometers. These data were used to explain differences between treatments in both cane growth and yield. Periods of over and under-irrigation were identified. Recommendations are made for the design and management of drip schemes sited on similar climatic conditions.

Title : Design and management of sugar cane drip irrigation systems

Abstract : A series of drip irrigation trials was laid down by the Institute of Hydrology and the Mauritius Sugar Industry Research Institute in the north of Mauritius in April 1983. Results from these trials show that, when compared to other methods of irrigation, drip irrigation increases cane yields and saves water. However, these benefits are only realized if drip schemes are designed and managed properly. Recommendations are given for the design and management of drip irrigation schemes for sugarcane based on the experimental results of the trials carried out in Mauritius on the Belle Vue Sugar Estate.
