Citation : Govinden, N.; Arnason, J. T.; The relative importance of competition for water and for light in intercropping of sugar cane with maize; 1990
Abstract : Two field trials were conducted to investigate the importance of competition for water relative to light in a mixed crop of plant sugarcane and maize. In the first trial under irrigation, the root systems of the component crops were separated by means of

Abstract : A method is described for scheduling the drip irrigation of sugar cane using 'index' tensiometers. Water is applied to maintain a chosen point in the profile near the dripline and root zone at a constant soil moisture potential. The quantities of water

Title : The effect on sugar cane yield, weed control, physical and chemical properties of the soil of minimum tillage v/s normal mechanical tillage
Year of publication : 1990
Keywords : SUGARCANE; MINIMUM TILLAGE SYSTEMS; SOIL PROPERTIES; CULTIVATION METHODS; YIELDS; WEED CONTROL; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Mc Intyre, G.; Barbe, C.; The effect on sugar cane yield, weed control, physical and chemical properties of the soil of minimum tillage v/s normal mechanical tillage; 1990
Abstract : After the convincing results obtained with minimum tillage on sloping lands this technique was evaluated on flat land. The effects of this practice on various parameters was studied. It was found that, except in heavy soils, minimum tillage was comparable to normal tillage in that no differences in cane and sugar yields were observed after a complete cane crop of five years or longer. Soil studies revealed that minimum tillage was superior with respect to soil structure and it resulted in a higher soil phosphate content. Root development was similar for both practices, but control of problem weeds was greatly improved by the minimum tillage practice.

Title : Outlook on nitrogen fertilization of sugar cane in Mauritius
Year of publication : 1990
Keywords : SUGARCANE; FERTILIZERS; NITROGEN; SOILS; PHOSPHORUS; POTASSIUM; PLANT NUTRITION; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Ng Kee Kwong, K. F.; Deville, J.; Outlook on nitrogen fertilization of sugar cane in Mauritius; 1990
Abstract : Studies with 15 N showed that less than 5 per cent of applied N (commonly applied at rates between 100 and 150 kg/ha) would pollute water resources in Mauritius and that less than 30 per cent was utilized by the crop. As a result, the approach to fertilization has changed, with little importance being attached to leaching losses (found to be insubstantial) and recognition of the lack of need to delay fertilization until development of an extensive root system by plant cane; application of complete NPK fertilizers (P and K giving best results when applied in the furrow at planting) has simplified fertilization. There is no longer any urgency to fertilize ratoon cane immediately after harvest. Close matching of N supply with cane demand has improved utilization efficiency. However, yields have not increased as a result of the changes.

Title : Foliar diagnosis of sugar cane - variation of leaf potassium value with age of cane and rainfall regime
Year of publication : 1990
Keywords : SUGARCANE; FOLIAR DIAGNOSIS; POTASSIUM; PLANT NUTRITION; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Ng Kee Kwong, K. F.; Gauthier, J.; Deville, J.; Foliar diagnosis of sugar cane - variation of leaf potassium value with age of cane and rainfall regime; 1990
Abstract : The potassium (K) content of top visible dewlap leaves of sugarcane ratoons in Mauritius varies in an irregular manner with age of cane. However, by increasing the number of leaf samplings, the fluctuation of the mean K values with age becomes less and less significant. As a result the running average leaf K concentration during three consecutive years of double leaf sampling is used to assess the K status of the crop. In these circumstances corrections to the analytical leaf K values for crop age do not have a noteworthy impact on the accuracy of foliar diagnosis for K status. Examinations of daily rainfall received 30 days prior to leaf sampling failed to show the significance of moisture regime on the K nutritional status of sugarcane. In some instances a high rainfall prior to leaf sampling gave rise to a high leaf K value while in other instances at the same site the opposite was true.
