Abstract : The presently used modified Truog method with 0.01M H2SO4 as extractant fails in numerous instances to predict the P status of soils in Mauritius. This may be explained by 0.01M H2SO4 removing mainly Ca-bound phosphate from the soils. In view of the sig

Abstract : Data gathered from Stage 2 of sugar cane selection programme were used to evaluate the potential of parents used in crossing since 1966, with the help of the computer. Selection rates were calculated for each cross and converted into ratios which enabled specific (SCA) and general (GCA) combining abiliities to be estimated. SCA and G CA values were graded according to their magnitude and to the number of varieties tested. The parent evaluation programme has enabled a more rational use of varieties during crossing. Possible improvements to the existing evaluation are envisaged.

Abstract : One of the strategies for diversifying agriculture and increasing food production on sugar cane lands in Mauritius is to intercrop the cane with food crops such as maize. If this practice, which is quite successful in Mauritius, were to be generalized in

Abstract : An estimate of per cent joints bored in a field can be obtained by two methods. In both cases stratified random sampling should be used. A stratum should have an area not exceeding ¼ ha. In the first method - sampling for per cent joints bored - two samples of 20 stalks each should be taken from each stratum. The second method is the calibration method whereby per cent joints bored is derived from a knowledge of per cent stalks bored. It relies on the fact that the regression coefficient b is known for a given variety and environment. Six samples of 20 stalks each should be taken from each stratum and the overall per cent stalks bored (x) detrmined. Then the percent joints bored (y) is determined by applying the regression equation y = 100 [ 1 - (1 - x/100) b].

Abstract : A virus with bacilliform particles measuring 131 x 31 nm was found in the sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) clones Mex. 57-473 and CP 44-101 grown in Morocco. This virus was also present in a sample of Mex. 57-473 from Hawaii. No folair symptoms were as

Abstract : Various congresses and meetings have broached the concept of the Indian Ocean as a distinct historical unit. One of the latest disciplines to support such a concept is marine archaeology. A synthesis of events connected with the g radual exploration of the routes of the diasporas across the Ocean is presented.

Abstract : This paper deals with trials undertaken in Mauritius to eradicate Cynodon dactylon (Bel Ombre biotype). The result suggest that at least two herbicides namely Fusilade Super and Roundup at 2 kg and 4 kg a.e./ha, can achieve this goal. However no less than three successive sprayings are necessary. The time required to achieve complete control as well as the number of sprayings required may be reduced by disc-ploughing the weed infested area prior to herbicide treatment. Moreover herbicide efficacy is increased if the volume of spray is reduced provided that penetration of the canopy is adequate.
