Title : Filter cake as a nitrogen fertilizer for plant cane in Mauritius
Year of publication : 1988

Abstract : The possible use of filter cake in the N fertilization of plant cane (Saccharum spp. hybrids) was investigated over a 3-year period in six different climatic zones in Mauritius. The data obtained from the field trials showed that nitrogen uptake by plant cane tended to be improved by filter cake in tow localities only. The present study not only confirmed the value of filter cake as a P source to sugarcane but also showed that more P may likely be taken up from filter cake that from an equivalent amount of triple superphosphate. It is therefore more likely that yield benefit observed in this study with filter cake was caused by an improved P nutrition of plant cane rather than by an enhanced supply of N from the filter cake.

Citation : Rajabalee, A.; Govendasamy, M.; Host specificity and efficacy of Apanteles flavipes (Cam.) and A. sesamiae (Cam.) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) parasites of sugar cane moth borers in Mauritius; 1988
Abstract : Host specificity of Apanteles flavipes (Cam) on Chilo sacchariphagus (Bojer) and Sesamia calamistis (Hamp) respectively was investigated and confirmed, contrary to what host records elsewhere reflect. A. sesamiae still shows a high and efficient degree of parasitism (49 per cent) whereas A. flavipes seems to have maintained a mean percentage parasitism (7-8 per cent) over the years.

Title : Quelques options de recherches pour la promotion des cultures dans les pays en voie de développement
Year of publication : 1988

Citation : Ricaud, C.; Quelques options de recherches pour la promotion des cultures dans les pays en voie de développement; 1988
Abstract : Owing to an overproduction of food commodities in developed countries and to a greater competition with synthetic products, agriculture in developing countries faces difficulties. This had led to a diversification of their economy towards manufacturing industries. In order to strengthen the agricultural sector and maintain the equilibrium between agriculture and industrialization, developing countries must have recourse to crop diversification, improvement of productivity and costs of production and formulate appropriate measures for manpower problems. Several avenues of research likely to yield immediate results are reviewed, as follows: choice of crops technology, agricultural economics, mechanization and exploratory work in new technologies such as biotechnology and remote sensing.

Abstract : The increased costs of overhead irrigation of sugar cane in Mauritius provides an incentive for adopting the more efficient drip irrigation practices. The necessary preliminary research to evaluate the possibilities of drip irrigation under local conditions is being undertaken jointly by the Mauritius Sugar Industry Research Institute and the Institute of Hydrology, UK and the results of irrigation regime, irrigation rates and dripline placement on the plant cane yield of three sugar cane cultivars are presented.

Abstract : The Homoptera known from the Mascarene Island (Mauritius, Reunion, Rodrigues) are listed with notes on the distribution of the species, their food-plants, economic significance and other points of interest. The species names used conform to recent taxonomic concepts, there being comment upon synonymy when necessary to clarify a cited record. The total number of species listed is 343, as follows: Cicadoidea, 9; Cicadelloidea, 12; Fulgoroides, 120; Psylloidea, 4; Aleyrodoidea, 30; Aphidoidea, 35; Coccoidea, 134.
