Citation : Rajabalee, A.; Govendasamy, M.; Ganeshan, S.; Biology and ecology of sugar cane white grubs in Mauritius; 1995
Abstract : Studies on the biology and ecology of the main sugarcane white grubs in Mauritius are being carried out and data available to date are presented. Phyllophaga smithi is by far the most common species, being found almost all over the island. It is, however, kept under control through various factors, and the actions of some of them remain to be determined. Scoliid wasps introduced in the past for its control are still quite common while gregarines have been found to infect a high percentage of the larvae. Heretonychus licas and Alissonotum piceum are very localized and of no importance.

Abstract : This paper reports on the design, objectives and experimental techniques being employed on a sugar cane drip irrigation resear ch project in Mauritius. The major factors being investigated are : the effect of irrigation regime, the position of driplines with respect to cane rows, the effect of row spacine and the differences between emitter-type and biwall-type driplines. This is being achieved by monitoring crop growth, the distribution of soil water potential and content, evapotranspiration, rainfall and crop water status.

Abstract : Research is being undertaken on the effect of various factors on yield of drip-irrigated sugar cane. Results for the plant crop are described; they indicate water regime to be the main factor determining cane yield, followed by placement of drip tubes. Other factors, such as flow rate, dripline type, and cane row spacing, had almost no influence on yield. The results are exlplained in relation to root development, soil moisture potential, and water depletion beneath the cane rows as well as leaf water potential and energy capture by the crop. An economic survey of drip and other forms or irrigation is also included in the project.

Title : Research and development on the tomato at the Mauritius Sugar Industry Research Institute
Year of publication : 1985
Keywords : TOMATOES; VARIETIES; PRODUCTION; YIELDS; QUALITY; MSIRI STAFF; FC; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Govinden, N.; Research and development on the tomato at the Mauritius Sugar Industry Research Institute; 1985
Abstract : Research and development on the tomato at MSIRI from 1977 to 1982 are reviewed. The main constraints to production were dependence on one inappropriate cultivar and land scarcity. The objectives were to develop better cultivars and to work out methods for their cultivation both in pure stands and in sugar cane interrows. Tomato lines were introduced from the Asian Vegetable Research and Development Centre. Selection was practised for determinate growth habit, high yield, resistance to bacterial wilt, tolerance of hot and humid conditions and fruit quality. A number of selections with these characteristics were obtained and released for commercial exploitation. The new cultivars have been well accepted by planters and consumers and can be grown in full stand without staking. Moreover, when grown in sugar cane interrows the yield of sugar is not reduced.

Title : Weed control in various food crops in Mauritius with particular reference to mixed cropping
Year of publication : 1985

Abstract : This paper is primarily meant to help growers in the management of the weed control programme. The properties and residual activity os certain herbicides are outlined, and the precautionary measures to be taken for the safe use of these chemicals in different food crops, whether planted in full stand or in sugar cane interrows, are given. Precise recommendations are also formulated for weed control in five important food crops in Mauritius.

Title : Dripline type, placement and water regime effects on sugar cane growth and yield
Year of publication : 1985

Abstract : MSIRI and IH have initiated a joint research project on factors influencing yield of drip-irrigated sugar cane. Results obtained on dripline type, dripline placement, and irrigation regime are presented in this paper. Water regime had the most effect on cane growth and yield. Dripline type and placement in a dual row spacing arrangement did not influence yield significantly. Management problems influence the choice of dripline type.

Title : On assessing yield losses due to maize mosaic virus in the field
Year of publication : 1984
Keywords : MAIZE; MAIZE MOSAIC VIRUS; PLANT VIRUSES; DISEASES; MSIRI STAFF; PATH; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Autrey, L. J. C.; On assessing yield losses due to maize mosaic virus in the field; 1984
Abstract : Resistance to 3 strs. of MMV increased with age of the host plants. MMV-Fine was the most infectious str., MMV-Coarse intermediate and MMV-Broken the least. Reduction in yield was related to the stage of growth at the time of infection : from emergence and up to 4 wk the disease was damaging to the crop. Results obtained in the field were not always consistent with those from glasshouse tests and work was further complicated by tolerance in some cultivars and by the presence of other viruses.
