Keywords : CULTIVATION METHODS; SUGARCANE; MECHANIZATION; MINIMUM TILLAGE SYSTEMS; IRRIGATION; WEED CONTROL; MSIRI STAFF; COWA; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Mc Intyre, G.; Evolution of cultural operations in the Mauritian Sugar Industry; 1984
Abstract : Some important cultural operations have greatly improved in Mauritius. These include a better land preparation and reclamation with the use of powerful bulldozers wherever possible; the introduction of minimum tillage, particularly on slopes, to combat erosion; improved irrigation techniques which provide a more proditable use of available w ater; a sophisticated and judicial use of herbicides; the use of amendments of cane rows to allow for more intensive interrow cultivation of food crops; the use of artificial ripeners to increase the sucrose content, particularly when the season starts early in the year; and finally, mechanical cane loading which has increased the efficiency of cane cutters.

Title : Minimum tillage in Mauritius - an adopted technique for the replanting of sugarcane in sloping lands
Year of publication : 1984

Citation : Mc Intyre, G.; Barbe, C.; Pitchen, J.; Yerriah, M.; Minimum tillage in Mauritius - an adopted technique for the replanting of sugarcane in sloping lands; 1984
Abstract : Sloping lands are subject to soil erosion when land is prepared during the warm, wet season in Mauritius. Accordingly, sugarcane growers replant their sugar cane fields during the fairly cool, dry season. Minimum tillage consists of spraying the herbicide Roundup to kill the old crop which is left to rot in situ, thus avoiding soil erosion that would result from land preparation. All trials that have been conducted have shown that g ives minimum tillage the new crop has a better start which results in a substantial increase in yield at harvest. This practice is therefore to be preferred to the usual uprooting of the old crop before replanting.
