Abstract : Polaris and Polado ripeners increased sucrose content and juice purity of cane infected with yellow spot disease. Canes in which the disease was controlled by weekly sprays of Benomyl fungicide responded better. For industrial application, the ripeners significantly increase sucrose content of cane when disease pressure is low but a properly timed application of fungicide, followed by a combined application of fungicide and ripener, would improve response when the disease incidence is severe.

Abstract : The incidence and pattern of infection by maize streak (MSV) and maize mosaic (MMV) viruses in the local cultivar and in imported hybrids were studied. Imported hybrids were more infected by MSV than the local cultivar, whereas the opposite held for MMV. Build-up of MSV was linear in susceptible imported hybrids when grown close to reservoirs of the virus. The pattern of MMV infection in them was masked by MSV infection. Build-up of the diseases was exponential in the local variety because of its tolerance to both pathogens. Little interference between the diseases was observed in this genotype. The comparative influence of alternative hosts, cropping pattern, vector populations, efficiency of transmission, as well as susceptibility of genotypes on incidence, spread and carry over of MSV and MMV, are analysed.

Abstract : Drip irrigation was first used in Mauritius in 1973. In the last two years there has been a big increase in interest in drip irrigation as a method of increasing the yields of sugar cane and other crops. Drip irrigation has many advantages when compared to other types of irrigation, however certain disadvantages such as clogging should not be overlooked. There are many factors that should be taken into consideration when selecting, designing or purchasing a drip system. Although a large number of research and pilot drip schemes are now in operation it will be several years before the true potential of drip irrigation in Mauritius to be ascertained.

Abstract : The selection and breeding programme for general adaptation or for specific ones is overviewed. Varieties having reached various stages of the selection programme are analysed as to their cane and sugar yield potential and also as to their reaction to the various important diseases met in Mauritius. The desirability of having high fibre cane for energy purposes is also discussed.
