Title : Quelques conclusions sur le pou à poche blanche à Maurice
Year of publication : 1979

Citation : Williams, J. R.; Quelques conclusions sur le pou à poche blanche à Maurice; 1979
Abstract : The "pou à poche blanche", Pulvinaria iceryi (Sign.), infected 4 000-5 000 ha of sugar cane in Mauritius in 1977 and caused a loss of production estimated at 15 000 - 20 000 tonnes of sugar. Many of the infested fields also had to be replanted. The insect sucks the phloem sap and has a particularly noxious action on the plant. The factors regulating its populations are complex but the outbreak in 1977 was probably the indirect result of climatic factors and it is unlikely that serious outbreaks will become more frequent.

Abstract : Experiments in laboratory silos (3 levels of molasses x 3 levels of N as ammonia or urea, or half N as urea and half as ammonia) showed that silages of good quality could be made from sugarcane tops alone or with the addition of molasses, urea or ammonia.

Citation : Deville, J.; Wong You Cheong, Y.; Digestibility and ruminal volatile fatty acid production of sugar cane tops silage by goats; 1978
Abstract : In a digestibility trial with goats, cane tops silage prepared with the addition of molasses at 5 per cent and ammonia at 0.2 per cent N had the same dry matter digestibility (66-69 per cent) as fresh cane tops. The ruminal volatile fatty acid patterns were also similar for the two diets.
