Abstract : This review covers the performance of the thirteen sugar factories which operated in Mauritius durihng the 1999 season. Length of the season, cane quality, milling and boiling house performance, sugar production, sugar quality, and energy production are discussed. All data have been calculataed from figures supplied by the sugar factories.The 1999 crop was marked by the most severe drought ever faced by the country. Cane and sugar productions were the lowest ever reached since the record low production in 1960 (due to two intense cyclones), and factory performance was severely affected by the poor quality cane. new equipment installed during the season includes a platular heat exchanger, a continuous vacuum pan, vertical crystallizers and a wet scrubber for flue gas scrubbing.

Title : A rapid method of estimating extraneous matter in a cane consignment
Year of publication : 1999
Keywords : Sugarcane; Cane quality; Extraneous matter; Sugarcane trash; Core sampling; Mauritius;
Citation : Wong Sak Hoi, L.; Lim Shin Chong, J.; Autrey, L. J. C.; A rapid method of estimating extraneous matter in a cane consignment; 1999
Abstract : With the deterioration in the quality of cane sent to sugar factories, the need for a rapid method of estimating extraneous matter in cane is strongly felt. Results obtained at two factories using a method involving about forty cane stalks taken from a cane consignment show that the method gives reasonably accurate results.

Title : Insects introduced into Mauritius during the 20th century: natural, accidental and deliberate introductions
Year of publication : 1999
Keywords : Insects; Mauritius;
Citation : Williams, J. R.; Ganeshan, S.; Insects introduced into Mauritius during the 20th century: natural, accidental and deliberate introductions; 1999
Abstract : An annotated list of insect species known to have been introduced into Mauitius in the 20th century is given. Of the 78 insect species, 45 were deliberately introduced and successfully established for the biological control of insect pests and weeds. Of 22 significant pests which entered, 18 did so in the second half of the century and of these no less than 14 arrived subsequent to 1975. Inadvertent insect introductions have increased greatly concomitant with increased traffic, especially by air, between Mauritius and the outside world consequent to the expansion of the Mauritian economy.
