Citation : Julien, M. H. R.; Testing ripeners: problems and prospects; 1978
Abstract : Variation of fresh weight yield per plot was the main problem encountered in field testing of ripeners. The variation was reduced by expressing results on a fresh weight per cane basis. The use of elongation measurements and derermination of dry matter

Title : The effects of time of harvest on the partitioning of dry matter in three sugar cane varieties grown in contrasting environments
Year of publication : 1978

Citation : Julien, M. H. R.; Delaveau, P. H.; The effects of time of harvest on the partitioning of dry matter in three sugar cane varieties grown in contrasting environments; 1978
Abstract : Dry matter content and its components, sucrose, fibre and reducing sugars were compared at 3 dates of harvest in 3 varieties for canes of 64 weeks of age grown in 4 contrasting environments. The evolutions of dry matter and its components were also followed during the 16 weeks preceding each harvest. For a given variety and date of harvest partitioning of dry matter was not influenced by the environment, but it was affected by date of harvest and variety. Increases in sucrose per cent fresh weight have been explained by an increase in dry matter content, partitioning of dry matter in favour of sucrsoe and conversion of reducing sugars into sucrose; there was no evidence of a desiccation effect. The varieties have also shown marked differences in ripening behaviour. The effect of age as a factor influencing ripening appears to be negligible in the present study.

Abstract : Growth, yield,dry matter accumulation and partitioning were compared in flowering (CF), naturally vegetative (CV) and photoperiodically induced vegetative canes (Vp) of 3 ages grown in two environments. Time of harvest is the most important factor affec

Title : Drip irrigation of sugar cane
Year of publication : 1978
Keywords : SUGARCANE; TRICKLE IRRIGATION; IRRIGATION; IRRIGATION SYSTEMS; MSIRI STAFF; FED; CHEM; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Li Pi Shan, L.; Hardy, M.; Chan, P. Y.; Drip irrigation of sugar cane; 1978
Abstract : A trial was initiated to compare drip and surface irrigations in sugarcane and to determine the influence of different spacings of cane rows and dripper lines. Five treatments were compared : (1) No irrigation; (2) One dripper line along every cane row; (3) One dripper line in every other interrow; (4) One dripper line in every smaller interrow with cane rows spaced at 0,97 m and 2,26 m alternately and (5) Surface irrigation. Cane rows for all treatments other than (4) were spaced at 1,62 m. Results for the first and second ratoons are presented. All the drip treatments gave significantly higher cane and sugar yields per ha than the surface irrigated treatment, while the unirrigated treatment gave the poorest yields. Treatments 2 and 4 were better than treatment 3 and treatment 2 showed slightly higher values.

Title : Separation of fly ash and other solid wastes from factory effluents by combined decanting and sieving over a pre-coated screen
Year of publication : 1978
Keywords : SUGAR FACTORY WASTE; FILTRATION; FLY ASH; EQUIPMENT; PROCESSING; MSIRI STAFF; ST; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Marie-Jeanne, S.; Separation of fly ash and other solid wastes from factory effluents by combined decanting and sieving over a pre-coated screen; 1978
Abstract : Separation of solids from wet scrubber effluent and filter cloth wash is achieved by means of a subsider and a D.S.M. screen. Effluent at the rate of 9,0 m3h-1m-2 settling area yields a supernatant liquid containing 0,4 g/h undissolved solids. Precoating of the D.S.M. screen enables the subsider underflow to be dewatered, to yield a disposable cake containing 81 - 83 per cent moisture.

Title : Computer model of a cooling crystallizer
Year of publication : 1978
Keywords : SUGAR; COMPUTER SOFTWARE; CRYSTALLIZATION; PROCESSING; EQUIPMENT; MSIRI STAFF; ST; ;
Citation : Maudarbocus, S. M. R.; White, E. T.; Computer model of a cooling crystallizer; 1978
Abstract : A mathematical model to stimulate the performance of a cooling crystallizer was developed from (i) material balance, (ii) crystal population balance, (iii) solubility data and (iv) growth rate data. The results of simulations to study the effect of operating variables, e.g. residence time, cooling rate, Brix of massecuite, crystal size and distribution, on crustallizer performance are described.

Title : Essais d'herbicides en culture de l'ail et de l'oignon
Year of publication : 1978
Keywords : ONIONS; GARLIC; HERBICIDES; WEED CONTROL; WEEDS; MSIRI STAFF; COWA; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Mc Intyre, G.; Essais d'herbicides en culture de l'ail et de l'oignon; 1978
Abstract : Trials conducted in garlic and onions plantations to compare various herbicidal treatments to hand-weeding, have shown that two herbicides, Ronstar and Preforan, when applied in pre-emergence, are safe to these crops. The respective crop yields are superior to that obtained from hand-weeding. Another chemical, Totril, may be used in post-emergence, as from the third-leaf stage of garlic and onions, but is effective on young broad-leaf weeds only.
