Title : Comparison of serological and inoculation methods for detecting latent infection of leaf scald
Year of publication : 1978
Keywords : SUGARCANE; DIAGNOSTIC TECHNIQUES; XANTHOMONAS ALBILINEANS; XANTHOMONAS VASCULORUM; DISEASES; BACTERIAL DISEASES; MSIRI STAFF; PATH; LEAF SCALD; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Ricaud, C.; Sullivan, S.; Felix, S.; Ferré, P.; Comparison of serological and inoculation methods for detecting latent infection of leaf scald; 1978
Abstract : Serological and inoculation methods were compared for the diagnosis of leaf scald disease of sugarcane, particularly the detection of latent infection in cane stalks. An antiserum against Xanthomonas albilineans, the causal agent, was prepared by serial

Title : The determination of grain size of Mauritius raw sugars
Year of publication : 1978
Keywords : SUGARS; CHEMICAL ANALYSIS; PROCESSING; MSIRI STAFF; ST; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Vignes, E. C.; The determination of grain size of Mauritius raw sugars ; 1978
Abstract : The grain size of Mauritius raw sugars has been determined using modification of the well-known methanol iso-propanol washing procedure. M.A. and C.V. indices found graphically according to the Powers' method are compared with those obtained by a purely mathematical assessment of the data, using a computer.

Title : Head loss through continuous crystallizers
Year of publication : 1978
Keywords : SUGAR; CRYSTALLIZATION; EQUIPMENT; MOLASSES; PROCESSING; MSIRI STAFF; ST; MASSECUITES; ;
Citation : White, E. T.; Maudarbocus, S. M. R.; Head loss through continuous crystallizers; 1978
Abstract : The conversion of a crystallizer station to continuous operation usually involves modification of equipment levels to provide the necessary heads for flow. Present methods used to estimate the heads required, or to size the baffles, weirs, ducts and channelling for each crystallizer seem to have been based largely on intuition. It is the purpose of this paper to summarise relations which can be used to calculate head-flow characteristics for the flow of molasses and massecuites through ducts, channels and orifices and over weirs. These relations are summarised in Table I, and should prove useful not only to m ill engineers, but also to designers of continuous vacuum pans and crystallizers.

Abstract : This publication replaces Occ. Paper no. 8 of 1962 and gives an up-to-date list of the insects, mites and nematodes associated with sugar cane in Mauritius, including their natural enemies. It also serves as a key to published information about the species concerned.

Title : Report on the "pou à poche blanche", Pulvinaria iceryi (Sign.)
Year of publication : 1978
Keywords : SUGARCANE; PULVINARIA; INSECT PESTS; PESTS; MSIRI STAFF; ENTO; SCALE INSECTS; PULVINARIA ICERYI; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Williams, J. R.; Report on the "pou à poche blanche", Pulvinaria iceryi (Sign.); 1978
Abstract : The recrudescence of Pulvinaria iceryi on sugar cane in 1976-77, which caused heavy losses in the 1977 crop and necessitated the replanting of many fields, is described. The history of the insect in the Mascarenes is recalled and an account is given of the salient features of its biology, while natural enemies and host-plants are listed. The influence of cane varieties on the distribution of attacks in 1976-77 and ocntrol measures are discussed.
