Title : The amino-acids of sugar cane
Year of publication : 1967
Keywords : AMINO ACIDS; SUGARCANE; JUICES; CHEMICAL ANALYSIS; MSIRI STAFF; CHEM; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Parish, D. H.; The amino-acids of sugar cane; 1967
Abstract : The free amino-acids occurring in leaf laminae and cane-juice have been studied. The amino-acid picture of leaf laminae is complex, but alanine is shown to account for one half of the total, whilst arginine has been shown to be depressed by nitrogenous fertilization. Pipecolic acid, methionine and tryptophan occur in juice as does a substance resembling 4-hydroxy-pipecolic acid; the presence of arginine is confirmed.

Title : The efficacy of nitrogenous fertilizers
Year of publication : 1967
Keywords : SUGARCANE; FERTILIZERS; NITROGEN; MSIRI STAFF; CHEM; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Parish, D. H.; The efficacy of nitrogenous fertilizers; 1967
Abstract : The possible sources of loss of nitrogen from fertilizers are discussed. With surface applied ammoniacal fertilizers volatilization losses are potentially important even on acid soils. The entire application of fertilizer nitrogen may be lost from the soil in less than one month during rainy season of the tropics. Laboratory studies on the zonal soils indicate the denitrification losses may not be important, contrariwise there is some evidence of non-symbiotic nitrogen fixation. Sulfate of ammonia is superior to urea: burying improved the efficacy of both fertilizers. N-serve was effective in field trials.

Title : The use of protein in sugar cane as an animal feed
Year of publication : 1967
Keywords : SUGARCANE; PROTEINS; ANIMAL NUTRITION; SUGARCANE BYPRODUCTS; MSIRI STAFF; CHEM; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Parish, D. H.; The use of protein in sugar cane as an animal feed; 1967
Abstract : The digestible crude-protein of oven-dried filter muds is low, so that this material has approximately the same nutritive value as dried green cane-tops despite a considerably higher content of crude protein. Cane juice coagulate has been fed as a supplementary protein source to chickens and it was found to be about one half the value of fish meal for this purpose. Amino-acid analyses of the coagulate show methionine is low and supplementation with this essential amino-acid may be needed.
