Abstract : Characters obtained by growth analysis techniques were studied in seven sugarcane clones and their seedling progenies from a ratoon crop 139 days after virgin harvest. Significant differences in progeny mean for Rw and mean Ea were mainly accounted for by differences in L. Four select clones had a mean Rw and mean Ea which, when adjusted to allow for their superior L, were significantly greater than average (P less than0.05). This illustrated that for selection to be effective from the progenies, segregants with improved L and better leaf-area dependence must be isolated. The estimates obtained of both L and Ea were effective in predicting final weight of cane. Variance components indicated especially large 'male x female' interaction in progeny means. Some evidence was obtained to suggest that leaf-area ratio is a character which could be used in selecting small plots for weight.

Abstract : Thornenema viriosum n. sp. is described. T. baldum (Thorne, 1939) Andrassy, 1959, T. sylphoides (Williams, 1959) Andrassy, 1960, and T. parvum (Williams, 1959) n. comb. are redescribed. T. parvum differs from all other species ascribed to the genus by its tail form, which is rounded. The four species occur about the roots of sugarcane in Mauritius.

Abstract : Twenty-three amino-acids have been detected in cane juice, pipecolic acid, methionine, tryptophan and ß-alanine for the first time, and the presence of a hydroxypipecolic acid is suggested; the presence of arginine is confirmed. Increasing the supply of nitrogen increases markedly the amides asparagine and glutamine and less markedly the basic amino-acids lysine, histidine, arginine and tryptophan. The neutral and acidic amino-acids tend to increase and the decrease in level with increasing nitrogen supply.
