Abstract : It is possible to apply a grade score to represent the relative worth of individual seedlings for commercial cultivation so that the progeny mean of such ratings bears a close relation with mean weitht per seedling. From the results which are presented i

Abstract : Most seedling varieties are discarded in Mauritius for inferior weight of cane, and of the survivors the majority again for low sugar caontent. Of the two attributes, high weight seems the more difficult to achieve with the necessary length being the chief limiting component. Although it is difficult to get exact figures, the necessary combination of high yield with adequate ratooning ability probably reduces possible selections by approximately one half.

Title : Photoperiodic experiments on the sugar cane variety C.P.36-13

Abstract : At the time when flowering is normally induced, long-day treatments on the variety C.P. 36-13 were observed to have an effect on three closely related phenomena. These were the time at which the inflorescence was first formed, the time of emergence of the arrows, and the proportion of arrows formed in each treatment. With regard to flowering habits, a close parallelism was noted betweeen the response of C.P. 36-13 to extra light treatments and the behaviour of different sugar cane varieties in the field. This suggested that long days in the one instance and genetic control in the other might cause different concentrations of a flower-promoting substance. It was concluded that the results of these experiments added further weight to the belief that under natural conditions in Mauritius, floral induction processes take place within critical daylengths.
