Abstract : Although no cases of cane smut have been found in Morocco, there is always the risk of introduction of wind-borne spores from other African countries such as neighbouring Mali and Snegal. For this reason, tests were conducted at Richard Toll in Senegal on plant cane and 1st ratoons growing in open fields. Of the seven CP varieties grown in Morocco, only two (CP 70-330 and CP 66-346) proved resistant and the rest were susceptible. The strategy that needs to be adopted in view of these results, including replacement of susceptible varieties, is discussed.

Abstract : Payment for sugar cane according to quality has been in force in Mauritius since 1940, and the method employed for assessing the quality of planters' canes and their share of commercial sugar has, with a few modifications, been successfully employed since then. The method is based primarily on the analysis of the planter's canes for fibre and of the first expressed juice for Brix and purity, and correlates these data with the factory figures from the crushing of all the canes for calculating the sucrose content of the planter's canes. Once the sucrose content is known, the recoverable sugar is calculated by using fixed efficiency standards laid down by the Central Arbitration and Control Board.

Abstract : The variations of low molecular weight nitrogenous compounds, including amino-acids, with nitrogen fertilization, variety, growing period, and site, have been examined. Nitrogen fertilization increases the level of these constituents markedly, whilst rainfall and/or response of the crop to nitrogen can also be important. Varietal characteristics are slight compared with these other factors. Organic acids on a field scale gave no marked trends with any of the variables. Unless a cane is abnormal, i.e., the cane is suffering from drought, the role of the amino-acids in sugar manufacture cannot be critical, as their concentration varies far more than the known factory performances, whilst any effect the non-nitrogenous acids have will be fairly constant.

Abstract : Experimental techniques for the evaluation of herbicides when crop and weeds are growing in association have not been given the attention they deserve in sugar-cane literature. Workers have used different methods with consequent lack of uniformity in the presentation of data. As a result, it is often difficult to appreciate fully the value of such investigations. The object of the present paper is to emphasize this particular aspect of the problem in describing experimental techniques that have been used successfully in Mauritius during recent years. Their practicability and limitations are discussed. In experimental agriculture, more particularly in weed control research, no technique can claim to be fully satisfactory. The present contribution, therefore, should only bne considered as an attempt towards a better understanding of weed control experimentation in sugarcane.
