Abstract : The course of dry matter synthesis and NPK absorption by first and second ratoon canes fertilized in September were studied at four locations differing in soil or climate. The results obtained showed that absorption of the three macronutrients followed the same pattern and was in phase with tiller formation. Following fertilizer NPK application, active uptake occurred with the absorption rate attaining a peak in December before declining to near negligible level by harvest in August. Dry matter production rate on the other hand only attained its maximum in March. Fertilization in fact did not alter the course of NPK absorption but enhanced their accumulation rates over at least part of the growth season with the result that at harvest more NPK was recovered and dry matter synthesized.

Title : Leaching and persistence of atrazine in two soils of Mauritius
Year of publication : 1992

Citation : Umrit, G.; Deville, J.; Ng Kee Kwong, K. F.; Leaching and persistence of atrazine in two soils of Mauritius; 1992
Abstract : Leaching of atrazine (2-chloro-4-ethylamino-6-isopropylamino-S-triazine) was studied in field lysimeters at Belle Rive (F soil, 3700 mm rain/year) and Réduit (L soil, 1550 mm rain/year). When used at the normal rate (2,4 kg a.i./ha) concentrations of atrazine in leachates at 1.0 m soil depth were below the maximum allowable concentration (MAC) of 3.0 µm/L and total leaching losses were 0.32 and 0.045 per cent respectively of the amount applied at Belle Rive and Réduit. At a higher rate (4.8 kg a.i./ha) concentrations in leachate exceeded the MAC and per centage leaching losses were 1.0 and 0.2 respectively in the superhumid zone of Belle Rive and humid region of Réduit. The magnitude of leaching loss was dependent on the volume of leachate and the proximity of leaching events to the date of application. The half-life of atrazine in the top 30 cm of soils varied between 36 and 59 days.

Title : Field experimentation to set up fertilizer nitrogen recommendation for sugar cane in Mauritius
Year of publication : 1992
Keywords : NITROGEN FERTILIZERS; SUGARCANE; NITROGEN; PLANT NUTRITION; MSIRI STAFF; CHEM; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Bholah, M. A.; Ng Kee Kwong, K. F.; Deville, J.; Field experimentation to set up fertilizer nitrogen recommendation for sugar cane in Mauritius; 1992
Abstract : The long term yield responses of sugarcane (P + 6R) to fertilizer N were examined and showed that field experimentation up to the third ratoon was sufficient to accurately establish the N fertilizer needs of sugar cane over its entire crop cycle of 7 years. Moreover, the N fertilizer requirements of sugar cane varied from one site to another within each soil group. The yield re sponse data averaged over a number of sites therefore only provide a guideline for deciding fertilizer N rate for a given site.

Title : Revue de la performance des nouvelles variétés de canne à sucre
Year of publication : 1992
Keywords : SUGARCANE; VARIETIES; SELECTION; SELECTION METHODS; BREEDING; MSIRI STAFF; PB; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Ricaud, C.; Domaingue, R.; Revue de la performance des nouvelles variétés de canne à sucre; 1992
Abstract : The efficiency of the sugar cane selection programme is reviewed. An analysis is made of the adaptation of cane varieties to extreme climatic conditions such as drought and excessive rainfall. Disease diagnosis and tissue culture are the main aspects being studied in the biotechnology programme. Sugar cane varieties having reached the final selection stages are compared to those commercially exploited. The performance of the newly released variety, M1658/78, is reviewed.

Title : An improved exhaustion formula for Mauritian final molasses
Year of publication : 1992
Keywords : MOLASSES; SUGARCANE; SUGAR; CHEMICAL CONTROL; PROCESSING; MSIRI STAFF; ST; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Wong Sak Hoi, L.; Sakurdeep, S.; An improved exhaustion formula for Mauritian final molasses; 1992
Abstract : Samples of final molasses were collected from nineteen sugar factories during the 1990 and 1991 campaigns, and were analysed for Brix, sucrose, reducing sugars and sulfated ash. Examination of the data for simple linear regressions and multiple-linear regressions involving non-sucrose and non-sugar components led to the development of a new reference purity equation : 36.82 + 157 R/NSe - 3.72 R/log A, where R= reducing sugars; NSe = non-sucrose, = dry matter- sucrose, = 0.82` Brix + 9.65 - sucrose; A= sulfated ash. The new formula gives a better indication of actual molasses exhaustion than the equation than the equation derived in 1968 viz reference purity = 44.6 - 4R/A.
