Title : Résultats des travaux en malherbologie et en pratiques culturales

Abstract : Experimentation on weed control and cultural operations is reviewed. Broadstrike, a new herbicide, has proved ineffective. Perflan, mixed with DCMU, is now recommended for large scale use in sugar cane. M 1658/78, a newly released variety, seems tolerant to the usual herbicide treatments. It has been shown that in long season plant cane, it is possible to establish an interrow crop in certain soils. 12 months cane cycle is definitely superior to the 24 months one. Trash blanketing should be adopted in dry areas because it significantly improves cane yield. Partially mechanized sugar cane planting has been successful.

Citation : Mc Intyre, G.; Machinisme agricole - Expérimentations et suivis de machines; 1993
Abstract : Many problems are met in the field and in the sugar factory when cane cutting and loading are mechanized. In most cases, subsoiling has been found unnecessary because it does not improve yield. Mechanized planting with whole stalk and billet planters needs to be improved before being adopted on a large scale. Cane loss is inevitable with harvesters, but it is higher in green than in burnt cane and varies also with the cane variety. Mechanical earthing-up of interline potato can be done when the plants have reached an average height of 10 cm.

Abstract : Crisps adversely made from stored whole potatoes turn brown, whereas texture is adversely affected when crisps are made from dehydrated slices. Rehydration as a step prior to crisp-making has been investigated in two commercially growtn potato va rieties
