Abstract : Gamma radiation effectively inhibits sprouting and extends the storage life of potatoes (variety Up-to-date) under ambient conditions. Treated tubers retain their excellent physical appearance and market quality at the end of preservation. The sprout-suppression potential of radiation will be further investigated in view of high temperature storage of ware potatoes.

Abstract : The sprouting behaviour of two potato varieties is significantly influenced by the growth stimulant gibberellic acid and growth retardants Cycocel, Phosphon-D and B-Nine, applied as a haulm treatment at tuberization. GA3 is effective as a sprout promotor and CCC as a sprout suppressor, the regulation action being strongly enhanced with concentration and t emperature. The effects of Phosphon-D and B-9 are inconsistent. Parallel experiments on sprouting of excised eye pieces and whole tubers treated directly with the growth regulators support these observations. Foliar sprays of CCC definitely retard sprouting and e xtend the storage life of potato tubers, without any undesirable morphological or biochemical alterations.
