Abstract : Ratooning in the sugarcane is influenced by various plant and non-plant factors. Lack or excess of water as well as temperature are the most important environmental factors which influence the initial stage of ratoon regrowth. In a number of countries tiller death and/or stubble death (gaps in ratoon crops) leading to a low population of millable stalk at harvest are responsible for ratoon yield ecline whilst in other cases stalk weight at harvest seems to play a more dominant role in ratoon yield. The above as well as the contribution of plant nutrition and water management to ratoon yield decline is reviewed together with the economic aspect of ratoon cropping. Gaps in our knowledge of cane ratooning are highlighted and in particular the physiological basis and mechanism involved in tiller mortality as well as dry matter accumulation by stalks of a ratoon crop.

Abstract : This paper demonstrates how the Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) technique can be used to determine the optimum number of ratoons in sugarcane. The basic data requirements are given and the use of sensitivity analysis for treatment of uncertainties (variation in prices, yields, etc.) is also discussed. The application of this method for the determination of optimal cane cycle under Mauritian conditions is illustrated.

Abstract : The eradication of old cane stubble poses a major problem for establishing new cane plantations and interrow cropping. Presently, satisfactory results are obtained with a minimum of five passes of light and heavy disc harrows, which is a costly procedure. In the search for more cost-effective techniques, a series of trials were conducted to determine the effectiveness of several combinations of implement passes. Results have shown that the rotary hoe is the best stubble eradicator, however, its use is restricted to stone-free soils because of possible blade damage.

Abstract : Gumming disease, caused by the bacterium Xanthomonas campestris pv vasculorum (Xcv) is an important disease of sugarcane and in Mauritius three races of the bacterium have been identified. Hybridoma technology was used for the production of monoclonal antibodies for the characterization of isolates. Balb/c mice were immunized by intraperitoneal injections with various antigen preparations namely live cells, heat fixed cells, formaldehyde fixed cells and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) extracts . Specific hybridomas to Xcv were obtained when spleen cells from mice immunized with heat fixed cells or LPS extracts were fused. One fusion produced hybridomas specific to race 1 isolates when compared to the other two races in indirect ELISA and dot blot test. The sensitivity of the specific ascites was found to be 1 x 106 cells/mL in indirect ELISA.

Abstract : Sugarcane leaf eating caterpillars areoccasional pests but may cause severe damage to sugarcane fields. They are in most cases pests of cereal crops and pasture grasses. The most important species belong to the genera Spodoptera and Mythimna. They are commonly referred to as armyworms. Results of experiments carried out in Mauritius show that treatment with thiodicarb is very effective. A fairly high number of parasitoides have been reared for Mythimna curvula in Mauritius.
