Abstract : The phenomenal growth of communication technology in recent years has given an increasingly prominent place to the use of mass media in development strategies. Sugar cane growers of the eastern sector of Mauritius were categorised according to size of holdings and interviewed about their perception of the different media used for conveying information on sugar cane cultivation and the perspectives of exploring new means of communication. Access to information was found to be related to scale operation. A series of improvements to existing extension delivery systems were suggested. Overall, television was rated as the most appropriate medium for disseminating information to growers and should be considered.

Abstract : An analysis is made on the performance of certain cane varieties planted on a large scale in 1997. The variety selection programme has been examined by three international experts and one of their main recommendations is to shorten the selection cycle. Results obtained with eight promising varieties as well as thosein final multiplication phase in nurseries, are scrutinized. Some of these varieties will most probably be released in the near future. Varieties M 96/82 and R 573 have been released in 1998 and will be distributed to all cane producers. Variety recommendations will be amended accordingly.
